OMG! This is the best cannoli in the Bay Area. Hands down. If you know a better cannoli – call me – we should have a cannoli taste-off! They also have amazing, homemade ice cream and more! This is a family owned ice cream / cannoli factory – it’s been here since I was a kid and I hope it is there for years to come. Please go enjoy!

Apple Fritter – San Mateo

My hubby and I are always on the quest for amazing breakfast joints. Apple Fritter is no secret even if they are tucked under the 92. Their doughnuts make my mouth water. Their menu is fun and delicious – a combination of naughty and nice. I’ve been here several names and never manage to snap a photo because I have to jump in – except for this one time – the stuffed french toast was to die for. Worth every calorie. Highly recommended.

Amazing Wok – In San Carlos

My hubby and I have enjoyed Amazing Wok since we started dating in 1998. The place has changed a lot over the years and when the original owners sold it – we were a bit worried our favorite Chinese Food spot would change. I am happy to report – Amazing Wok is still as delicious as ever. Their potstickers are so good. We enjoy popping over for lunch and the addition of a small salad was a nice surprise. We’ve tried about every dish and they are all so delicious. We head over when we want something spicy and savory and they serve it up hot and with a smile. THANK YOU for keeping a good thing going!

Rin’s Bridal of San Carlos – The Beat on Where to Shop

With my 15 year wedding anniversary on the horizon – I’ve been walking down memory lane and realized that when I got married there was no Yelp so I am going to make up for lost time and do a little shout out to Rin’s Bridal of San Carlos.

Born and raised in San Carlos, I remember walking by Rin’s and admiring all the dresses – day dreaming of going in there and wearing them. My first job at Wells Fargo on Laurel Street – Rin was one of my buinssess clients while I was still a teller. Flash-forward to high school, my mom took to me to Rin’s to get all my prom dresses, flash-forward to my wedding day and I remember going with my mom, mother and sister-in-law to be and trying on all the dresses. Rin still remembers me and if she remembers me after 15 years – I know she loves and cares for all her brides and customers with that level of care. She had all the samples, great shoes and veils, we got everything we needed for our bridal party at Rin’s. She is kind, knowledgeable about trends and what is best for you. If you need a Glam Squad – head over to Rin’s in San Carlos!

Bubble & Wrap Waffle in Redwood City

I love ice cream – I love waffles. No wonder hubby made sure our date stopped at Bubble Wrap and Waffle on Broadway in Redwood City. We had the s’mores and dreams. The waffle is delicious – great batter, soft and crispy. We need to come back and taste their savory menu. It was delicious – I wanted more ice cream. Worth a stop for a sweet treat!

Bravas – Bar de Tapas

For this entry – I ventured away from the Bay Area and I hope you do too! My husband and I were enjoying the Wine Country for a little get-a-way and house hunting when we came upon Bravas. We used Yelp to help us narrow down the search close to our hotel. There were so many choices but for some reason I was drawn to Bravas. With a click we made a reservation and little did I know the experience would last me a lifetime.

I love tapas, little plates of goodness and a nice cocktail. Well, Bravas offered this and so much more. Nestled in a craftsman home converted into this restaurant – I instantly loved the décor and mixed home and bar feel. It was like hanging out in your friends really cool home. With a bar at the center, an awesome remodel of modern mixed with rustic. I truly enjoyed it the moment we walked in.

Where to begin! We started with sliders – the Duck Boccadillo (meatball) and Pork Cheek Bocca. Wow! The duck was tender and well seasoned. The savory sauce it was serviced with, tomato sofrito and green olive purée was excellent. The pork cheek was a new experience for me – I’d never had it before. Wonderful portion of pork cheek, dripping with flavor and served salsa verde and pequillo pepper.

Next we had the Creamy Chicken, Ham & Gruyere Cheese Croquetas. Oh My God. Little bites of fried heaven. I really cannot say enough. We savored these! Then we had a little vegetable intermission – the grilled Asparagus served with aioli and sprinkled with cheese.

On to the Skirt Steak, served with red onion marmalade and valdeón cheese – was a delicious! I truly enjoyed the marmalade; it was a nice surprise, meat cooked perfectly. And then, we had the Octopus! This by far was my most favorite dish in taste and presentation. Served with smoked paprika and olives was amazing. The seasoning spot on and the Octopus grilled perfectly!

And when we didn’t think we had any more room – we had to try the Cider Braised Chorizo served with fried Shishito Peppers. What a delight. The peppers were fresh and crispy, the chorizo had a good spice!

Now doesn’t that sound delicious! We coupled our dinner with Mojitos, laughter and good fun. One of my best nights with my man! A wonderful food experience! So if you find yourself in Healdsburg – make sure to detour over to Bravas!

Hello! Thank you for reading my first installment of REAL EATS, the beat on where to eat. I thought I’d combine my love of good food with my passion for Real Estate and blog about local restaurants. I mean, what better information for a Realtor to know than where the best restaurants are and if you can walk to them from your house! I plan on sharing my favorite spots up and down the San Francisco Peninsula and beyond. I hope you have a chance to enjoy the amazing food our communities have to offer.

The Refuge – 963 Laurel Street, San Carlos

So for my first entry – I chose one close to my heart and soul for a couple of reasons. One – it’s silly – but the building was my former Karate DoJo. Oh the memories of testing for belts in the same space I am now sipping a beer and enjoying a fine sandwich – is a riot. I love watching communities grow, how buildings change and repurposed. Anyway – let’s get to the food!

When I first discovered that a restaurant in my favorite town – San Carlos – was featured on Diners-Drive-Ins-and-Dives – I was so excited. When I saw the episode, my husband and I couldn’t wait to head down there. Let me tell you – we were not disappointed. On our first visit, hubby got the Ruben and I got the Toasted Slaw #19. Oh boy! The moment that plate hit the table, it smelled so good, I knew I was in for a treat. The bread was perfectly toasted, the sauerkraut on the Reuben and the Slaw on mine were well seasoned. Good cheese, great flavor… But the meat – the House Made pastrami – the lacquer – was spectacular! I am drooling just thinking about it. Needless to say – we’ve returned several times and enjoyed bringing new people to appreciate their treats. I even tried the grilled Cambozola Sandwich. Good Lord, the gooey blue cheese with caramelized onions, matched with the apple and lemon-tomato marmalade. Heaven. Delicious Heaven. Oh it comes with a salad too. And a side of guilt for eating something so decadent – hahah – but worth every bite!

I managed to snap two photos in my numerous visits. Seriously – the food is that good I forgot I want to take a picture; the camera doesn’t stand a change against my hunger. Oh, they also have a plethora of awesome beers from around the world. So truly a treat for every single one of your taste buds.
